For those of you who are interested, the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen program is part of the Miss America Organization. This is the current Outstanding Teen’s blog to document her journey!

One of my favorite former Miss America’s. Inn 1995 she was crowned Miss America and the first hearing impaired title-holder.

This is Caryn and she is one of the bravest people I could tell you about. She is my sister queen’s cousin. She is inspiring and strong and God is healing her every day.

Caryn just turned 11yo on January 16. On November 29, 2011 she was diagnosed with a rare brain cancer named Anaplastic Astrocytoma. We are praying for Caryn’s miracle. She loves God dearly and wants Him to heal her. Please join us!”

The new Miss America! Laura Kaeppler. This is the post-pageant press conference that followed her being crowned.

^^^This book, Under the Crown, was written partly by Miss America 2002, Katie Harman. The entire book itself is a written by the contestants of the Miss America 2001 contestants. It is an incredible insight to the lives of the incredible women who came together the week of the 9/11 attacks.  It shows the “determination and American spirit” that the ladies posses.
*Highly recommended.

Oh! and I forgot to mention…
My name is Averi Harris. I am from Slidell, Louisiana, which is a town in St. Tammany Parish (hence the title). I go to Southeastern Louisiana University and I am studying social science. My passion is dance and I hope to make a career out of it one way or another.. trust me it is a pretty long story! So short and sweet, I want to help people through the art and gift of dance. I think that education is one of the most important things and it is one of the best opportunities. I think that all should take advantage of it!

Teresa Scanlan, Miss America 2011

And so it begins..

On December 10, 2011, I was crowned with the title of Miss St. Tammany Heritage 2012. This isn’t exactly new territory for me, but it is always a new experience. My first time competing in a pageant I won the title of Miss Slidell’s Outstanding Teen 2009. I was blessed with the Best Director ever. That title prepared me for where I would be now. I would have never guessed that I would be a Miss Louisiana contestant. To people who aren’t affiliated with pageants, or don’t know much about our community, that is why I am writing this. I want to document my journey and help people understand the Miss America Organization and know why it is so prestigious.
